Just south of Sedona on Highway 89a you will find the Sedona Mago Retreat Center entrance park. Filled with love and fellowship and respect for one another and Mother Earth, it is also home to a 40′ tall statue depicting Mother Mago. The location of this work of art has caused quite a stir in Cottonwood, Arizona. Some folks think it is not appropriate for this location, some think it’s ok, some don’t agree with the philosophy of the Tao, and some would like to see it taken down. Whatever your belief, the Mago Park is something to visit. You decide about the statue: is it art or is it advertising?

  • When I first saw the statue a few weeks ago, I thought it was the new Catholic Church’s J.C., but all the other “stuff” around it didn’t make sense. Other Sedonians I spoke with about the statue thought the same.

Anyway, maybe it would be better as a miniature golf course! Those always have lots of fanciful things too. Looks like there’s room for about three 18 hole courses.

I BELIEVE THIS STATUE IS ALL FOR ADVERTISING AND TAKE OVER OF THE SEDONA AREA. THIS STATUE IS A POOR DEPICTION OF REAL ART AND SOME OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS THEY HAVE THERE ARE A SLOPPY REPRESENTATION OF ARTWORK. I BELIEVE IT WAS PURPOSELY SET ACROSS FROM A CHURCH TO STIR UP THE LOCAL PEOPLE.

Religious competiton, like commercial competition to me is healthy in our multi-ethnic democracy.

  • I’m wondering if anyone complained about the height of the neighboring church steeple? Or its size being in the middle of nowhere?
